Paul Klee made this ‘Landhaus In Norden’ with oil and watercolour, using a really pared-down palette of soft greens, yellows, blues and reds. The painting is kind of like a map or a diagram. The texture is really interesting. It's not super obvious, but when you get up close you can see how Klee built up these tiny little marks. It's almost like he's knitting the image together, thread by thread. See the way he’s used these green hatched marks to create the impression of a hedge or some tufts of grass? I love how these colours bleed into each other, dissolving the distinction between land and sky. It’s a dreamlike effect, as if the landscape is shimmering and uncertain. Klee reminds me of other artists who loved to play with these kinds of ambiguities, like Kandinsky. His work invites us to slow down, to look closely, and to embrace the multiple possibilities of seeing.
