Curator: So delicate, it almost feels like a whisper. The scene is softened with a hushed tone and gentility. Editor: I am happy to introduce this delicate piece, titled "Gezicht op een schuur met links een groep bomen" or "View of a barn with a group of trees on the left". This work is attributed to Leendert K.C. Prins, and was likely created sometime between 1897 and 1957. We believe this drawing was created using primarily pencil. Curator: The precision in the strokes creates such defined shapes and shadows—the overall composure makes the viewer focus on the architecture itself; yet, it could be argued that the group of trees on the left really offer that counterpoint that adds beauty. The perspective certainly shapes my viewpoint. What are your thoughts? Editor: I think you're spot on. There is certainly something intentional with the emphasis on structure in combination with this ethereal sketchiness. Prins's work during this period certainly suggests this push and pull – often depicting buildings with this same intense, geometric emphasis, against an impressionistic, natural setting. It's fascinating when we look at it through the lens of the emerging urban landscape in the Netherlands during this time, where rural life and this expansion begin their interesting collision. It's as though there's a push and pull represented on paper between those two points. Curator: That offers even further interpretation. I hadn’t looked at it in that manner, I think your points certainly provide much needed historical and socio-cultural points to really provide understanding about the artist's time. What really remains important, is the feeling of intimacy the artist provides and their use of something like simple pencil against this transformation, if one reads in this light, really creates such emotion. Editor: Well, as always, another lens provides different viewpoints for each individual’s enjoyment. Thank you for contributing today, hopefully we’ve allowed those listening in a bit of additional information regarding Prins.
