This photograph, "Gevel van het Stadskorenpakhuis te Schoonhoven", a black and white print of modest dimensions, was made at an unknown date by someone at Monumentenzorg. It's really all about line, isn't it? I mean, look at how the lines define the buildings, create depth, and even suggest the texture of the stone. The lack of color actually emphasizes the tonal range. I'm drawn to the area around the building’s portal. The photographer has perfectly captured the light as it picks out the gothic details, making the ornate carvings almost seem to vibrate. It’s like a dance of light and shadow, with the deeper recesses of the archway hinting at hidden stories. It reminds me a little of some of Bernd and Hilla Becher's work, the way they meticulously documented industrial structures, turning the ordinary into something monumental. Except here, there is an interest in the purely decorative. Ultimately, it's a beautiful reminder that art—in all its forms—is about how we see and what we choose to notice.
