This landscape with sheep, drawn by Andreas Schelfhout sometime before 1870, is executed in graphite on paper, humble materials that are readily available. Look closely, and you’ll see how Schelfhout coaxes depth and texture from the graphite. Notice the density of marks suggesting the rough bark of trees, and then compare that with the lighter, more scribbled application giving the impression of a distant wood. This range wasn’t achieved by varying the pressure of his hand alone. The key is the point of his graphite stick. A sharp point allows him to create crisp, thin lines, while a blunter, broader one provides a softer, more diffuse effect. The drawing feels almost casual, like a quick study. But don’t be fooled! Schelfhout clearly understood how to use his materials to create a convincing sense of space and atmosphere. He reminds us that skillful handling of materials is at the heart of all artistic expression, whether high or low.
