This photographic album page captures a winter holiday in Semmering, Austria, by Berti Hoppe. I like the grainy texture of the images; the way the light seems to bounce off the snow, creating a stark contrast between the dark buildings and bright outdoors. I think about Hoppe holding their camera, framing each shot with intention. What were they thinking about as they documented these scenes? What was it like to be there? What did the snow feel like? Was it cold? The buildings seem to have a monumental quality. I find myself wondering if they had any formal training. And, of course, it makes me think about other artists who have grappled with similar issues of capturing light and texture in their work. I look at a photograph like this and imagine it translated into paint. It gives me ideas for my own work. Artists are constantly in conversation with each other, across time and space. The possibilities are endless.
