Oscar Dominguez painted "Los platillos volantes," or "Flying Saucers," using surrealist techniques to explore themes of the subconscious. The vortex, a powerful swirl of color and energy at the top of this composition, has ancient roots. We see this motif echoed in the whirlpools of classical mythology, symbols of chaos and transformation. But here, in Dominguez’s modern vision, the vortex takes on new life. Consider its similarity to images of galaxies or even microscopic organisms; the artist transforms an ancient symbol into a gateway to unseen realms. It is the collective unconscious at play, I believe, evoking a primal sense of awe and perhaps even fear. The unknown always elicits feelings in the viewer. Like the ouroboros, the snake biting its tail, it represents cyclical processes of destruction and creation. And now it re-emerges in this modern context, reminding us that the past is never truly gone.
