Suzanne Roy made this textile design, and looking at it, I'm thinking about all the drafts, all the trials and errors that go into making something look so effortless. I sympathize with Suzanne, imagining her at her desk, playing with different forms, trying to find the right balance of pattern and negative space. What was she thinking when she sketched that little diamond shape, or that burst of leaves? I like how some of the shapes are rendered in muted grey, while others pop in a coral pink. It makes me wonder if she was thinking about adding color to a finished piece, or just experimenting with contrasts. That open shape with the spiky leaves, sitting there like a question, it's a classic Roy move, echoing the forms of her other designs while retaining its own unique character. Painters are always having a dialogue with each other, across time, inspiring each other's creativity. And like Suzanne, we embrace ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
