Vierdaagse zeeslag 1666

This silver medal, commemorating the "Vierdaagse zeeslag", or Four Day Sea Battle, was made by Christoffel Adolphi sometime in the 17th century. The creation of this medal was no simple task. The design was first engraved in steel dies. These were then used to strike the image into the silver, with considerable force. This process, requiring skilled hands and specialized tools, highlights the value placed on craftsmanship during the period. Note how the metal is used to capture the intensity of naval warfare. The ships in conflict, clouds of smoke, and inscription are meticulously rendered in low relief.
