Editor: Here we have an engraving in silver, depicting the “Coronation of William III and Mary II Stuart” by Anton Meybusch, made in 1689. The material gives it a subtle and formal feel, fitting for such an event. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Focusing on its intrinsic properties, the piece exhibits a refined baroque style. Observe the circular composition; each medallion presents a profile portrait meticulously framed by inscribed text. Notice how the artist used the metallic medium to render the relief and create contrast between the figures and ground. Consider also the use of symmetry. Editor: Symmetry? Do you mean because there are two profiles on two separate circles, but each circle focuses on just one? Curator: Precisely. Although each coin features one ruler, the symmetry across both coins – from the rendering of their facial features to the elaborate clothing– visually unites them. How does that emphasis contribute to its success, would you say? Editor: I guess the intention here would be to visually emphasize them as equals. It does add to the balance of the artwork overall, too. I also see that there's very fine detail considering how small they are. What's the inscription there? Curator: The text encircling the portraits acts as a frame and enhances its composition. However, I must focus my assessment to what I see within the objects themselves. Ultimately, this object represents power dynamics through shape, medium and carefully placed composition. Editor: I understand. I suppose I can better appreciate now the interplay of material and imagery and how they work together to produce a certain effect. It makes me think about the role of design and presentation of similar medals today, like the subtle messages sent in things such as sporting medals!
