Théophile Alexandre Steinlen created 'L’aventure Du Vieux Doyen', an undated drawing that offers a glimpse into late 19th-century Parisian society. Steinlen, known for his social realism, was deeply influenced by the political and social issues of his time. He often depicted the lives of the working class, and the underbelly of Parisian life. Here, a well-dressed older man, possibly a dignitary given the ribbon on his lapel, is accosted by a crowd of women. The scene is ambiguous, yet suggestive. Are these women admiring fans, or something else? Their expressions and attire hint at the complex dynamics of gender and class in Parisian society. Steinlen neither glorifies nor condemns; instead, he presents a slice of life, inviting us to contemplate the power dynamics at play. The artist challenges us to reflect on the societal roles and expectations of both men and women during this period. What does it mean to be a woman in this time and place? And what does it mean to be an older man with apparent power?
