Gosta Adrian-Nilsson created this drawing for "Le Peintre" with graphite, conjuring an image of an artist surrounded by the structures of the city. You know, I imagine Adrian-Nilsson with his pencil in hand, finding the lines that construct the painting, just like the scaffolding of a building. There he is, the painter in his geometric suit, cigarette in mouth, brush in hand: a figure of contemplation amongst the city's buzz. Is the artist part of the structure of the city, or separate from it? A mechanical figure in a mechanized world? The towers and roofs recede into the distance, yet they press in on him. He is on a balcony, but is he stuck? The geometric forms of his body are echoed by the shapes of the buildings. Look at the little curlicues on the iron railing, rhyming with the smoke rising from the chimneys. It makes me think of Fernand Léger... Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas, inspiring one another's creativity. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
