Nicolas Lancret created this drawing, "Head of a Flautist, Head of a Young Man with Flat Beret, Three Hands Holding Drawing Instruments," using red and black chalk on paper. The sheet presents a compilation of studies, each rendered with a delicacy and precision that invites us to consider the artist’s method. The red chalk dominates, giving warmth to the skin tones and defining the contours, while the black chalk adds depth. Lancret’s use of line is particularly striking. It's not merely descriptive but expressive, capturing the subtleties of form and light. The composition is not laid out according to traditional concepts of perspective. The assortment of drawings suggests the artist's exploration of gesture, expression, and the tools of his craft. The drawing seems to challenge the viewer to create order out of seeming fragmentation. The very act of drawing becomes a subject in itself. The drawing embodies a conceptual framework where the fragments of observation are as vital as the complete image.

This sheet by Nicolas Lancret imitates the three-chalk technique typically employed by Watteau. The artist arranged the studies of various details on the surface in such a way that they bear a relation to one another and perhaps even playfully form a portrait. The sheet entered the Städel Museum collection as a Watteau. Owing to a correspondence with a painting, however, it has likewise meanwhile been attributed to Lancret.
