Carlo Carra made this oil painting, Vele nel porto, with dominant gestural marks and a subdued color palette. You can almost feel the act of painting itself – that push and pull of color, the testing, the adjustments, the emerging image. I sympathize with Carra! I wonder, what was it like to stand before the canvas, wrestling with those waves, those boats, that sky? The paint looks thin in places, almost watery, especially in the sky and sea, creating a sense of fluidity and movement. The way he’s dragged the brush across the surface to create the waves – it's like he’s trying to capture the sea's restless energy. It's fascinating how one gesture, one brushstroke, can communicate so much feeling. Carra was part of the futurist movement, but here he seems to be in conversation with other painters who’ve looked to the sea for inspiration. Artists are always talking to each other across time like that. Painting is this ongoing exchange, inspiring each other's creativity. Each artist has their own perspective, their own way of seeing and feeling, which makes every painting a new kind of inquiry. It's more than just what you see, it's about how it makes you feel, and what it makes you think.
