Takashi Murakami made this image, Homage to Director Hideaki Anno; Godzilla Resurgence & Evangelion, without specifying the exact date or the medium. The lines are popping! There's this great sense of movement, like he’s showing us an action scene at a million miles an hour. Murakami's got this amazing way of building his images out of these flat planes of color. Look at Godzilla's skin. He's basically built up of tiny jigsaw pieces and it makes it look almost pixelated, and that jaggedness gives the whole thing a super energetic feel. The colors, too, are just cranked up to eleven. Everything's so vibrant, it almost vibrates. There’s a real sense of controlled chaos that reminds me of James Rosenquist’s collaged pop paintings from the sixties. He really understands that art is all about embracing the messy, unpredictable stuff that happens along the way, and I think that’s pretty awesome.
