Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke c. 17th century
Curator: What captures my eye is the somewhat hesitant gaze...almost a nervous vulnerability, in this portrait of Philip Herbert, the 5th Earl of Pembroke. Editor: He looks like a teenager playing dress up! Pierre Lombart, the artist, really leaned into the finery, didn't he? All that silk and lace. Curator: Silk was used as a symbol of status and wealth, it was also one of the most desired goods throughout history. Editor: The sword and sash... are they supposed to project power, or is it all just performative? Curator: Possibly both? He was a nobleman, after all. These symbols helped reinforce one's position in society. Editor: He's holding his hand over his heart, an odd gesture. It could suggest devotion or sincerity. Curator: It lends a sense of intimacy to the piece. I keep wondering what was going through his mind at the time. Editor: Well, whatever it was, the artist captured it. It is a wonderful combination of fragility and grandeur. Curator: I agree. It makes you reflect on the person behind the title.
