Curator: Note how the angle and framing are arranged so we can perceive spatial depth: forms overlap slightly which makes it very successful, a visual treat if you think how hard that was to do. The very limited use of tone leads to a sense of structural rigidity. It creates an interesting tension between the technical limitations of the daguerreotype process, its chemical construction, and Davanne’s artistic intent.
