Vincent Xeus painted ‘Its All Make Believe’, a modern artwork, with monochrome blue hues to evoke a sense of melancholy. The closed eyes and windswept hair speak to a powerful emotive force. We see this motif of the obscured face throughout art history: in the veiled figures of antiquity, concealing and revealing at once, and in countless depictions of ecstatic saints, eyes closed in divine communion. Consider Bernini's Saint Teresa, lost in a vision, her face a mask of sublime surrender. The closed eyes are particularly potent. They appear in many forms and convey a sense of introspection, blindness, or spiritual transcendence. Think of Oedipus blinding himself, or the wise seer Tiresias. This act of closing one's eyes is a rejection of the external world. The collective memory echoes with such symbolism, imbuing the gesture with layers of meaning. It is an invitation for the viewer to look inward, to feel the subconscious pull of shared human experiences across time.
