This small pencil drawing, "Paard en wagen" by Anton Mauve, offers us a glimpse into the rural life that was quickly disappearing in the late 19th century with increasing industrialization. Mauve lived during a time when rapid social and economic changes were reshaping European society. The rise of industrial capitalism brought new opportunities, but also led to the exploitation of labor and the disruption of traditional ways of life. Horses and carts like the one depicted here, were essential for transportation and agriculture, yet they also represent the labor of both humans and animals which was often grueling and underappreciated. Mauve's drawing, with its soft lines and muted tones, invites reflection on the relationship between humans, animals, and the land. "The artist does not exist," Mauve once said, "except as a medium for the transmission of beauty." This artwork encourages us to remember those whose contributions have often been overlooked in the march of progress, and to consider the impact of our actions on both the environment and on each other.
