This fierce-looking figure is Begtse Chen, a protector deity, made in China from gilt bronze. The lost-wax casting process allowed for incredible detail, like the deity's armor and flaming hair. Molten bronze was poured into a mold, then meticulously chased and engraved. Finally, it was gilded, giving it a lustrous golden surface. Begtse Chen's menacing expression and dynamic posture – weapon raised, foot forward – are meant to inspire awe and respect. The bronze medium, with its inherent weight and permanence, reinforces his power. You can tell this was crafted by skilled hands, deeply familiar with the material’s possibilities. Understanding the artistry involved sheds light on the broader cultural and historical context. It challenges the traditional divide between art and craft, inviting us to appreciate the skill and artistry embedded in this work.
