This silver jug with a cover was crafted by Pezé Pilleau, in the 18th century. Notice the engraved shield. In its heraldic design, we see a mirror reflecting more than just status. Shields, emblems of protection, have roots stretching back to ancient warfare, adorning soldiers with symbols of power and lineage. Here, on a domestic object, it whispers tales of lineage and legacy within the private sphere. Consider the twisted forms that frame the shield. We see it mirrored in gothic architecture, and the organic forms of the Renaissance, always evoking an aura of prestige. This visual dance—from armor to tabletop—reveals how symbols transmute across eras, subtly influencing our perceptions of value and belonging. As such, the jug becomes a vessel not just for liquid, but for history itself.
