This mysterious invitation to the Rijksprentenkabinet was composed around 1935, using ink on paper, and made by an unknown artist. What I love about it is the sense of gesture, like an action painting from the mid-century, except with words. Look at how the ink varies – sometimes thick, sometimes broken. See how the pressure changes, giving life to each stroke and letter. The writing has a really beautiful flow to it, especially in the word 'Rijksmuseum', like a dance across the page. It’s the kind of movement you might see in Cy Twombly's scribbles, that same loose, energetic line that makes you feel the hand of the artist. There's even a great stamp up in the corner, like a readymade collage element, a bit like what you might find in Kurt Schwitters’ work. I am compelled by how it feels like both message and art, existing somewhere in between.
