Here is an invitation to the Rijksmuseum’s print cabinet, penned sometime around 1935. I love how handwriting captures the movement of the hand, that connection between the brain, the hand, and the paper. What was the writer thinking as they scratched out the address? Did they pause, search for the right word, or feel a sense of urgency? The ink looks a little faded. See how the letters aren't perfectly formed, but have their own rhythm and quirks. You can see the person in the writing. It's like a little dance on the page. I imagine the writer sealing the envelope, walking to the post box and sending it off into the world hoping it would catch the eye of the director. In a way, this humble piece of mail embodies art's enduring spirit of connection.
