Chagall made this lithograph, 'The Parade', with crayon and brush. The whole thing has this gorgeous, floaty quality, like a dream you can almost grasp. It’s the layers and the way they bleed into each other that gets me. Look at the salmon-pink haze in the center. It’s not just color; it's atmosphere. Notice how the figures are outlined, but the colors wash right over those lines, breaking them up, letting the forms breathe. It's loose and free, like he’s not trying to nail anything down, just letting it unfold. It’s about feeling more than seeing, you know? Chagall makes me think of another artist I admire, Redon, who similarly mixed dream and reality, using a kind of symbolic imagery to evoke feelings over narratives.
