Agostino Masucci created this ink drawing, "A Saint Crowned with Flowers by Mary and Receiving the Host from Christ," sometime in the 18th century. The energetic lines pull you into a divine scene, where a saint is being crowned amidst a gathering of celestial figures. The composition is a flurry of activity, with the dense hatching creating a sense of depth and movement. Note how Masucci uses line weight to differentiate the figures, giving them volume, while the circular arrangement of angels directs our gaze towards the central act of crowning. There is an interesting semiotic relationship between the characters; they all offer the gift of something, whether it be flowers, Eucharist or simply their adulation. Masucci's drawing employs a dynamic interplay between the earthly and divine. The composition guides us to consider how these different orders are structured, how hierarchies are established, and ultimately, how we can question their fixed positions.
