Adrianus Johannes Bik created this pencil drawing of a clove tree and a man on Ambon Island in the Moluccas in 1821. The work depicts a tropical scene, but it also speaks to the complex social and economic dynamics of the time. The Dutch East India Company controlled the spice trade in this region, including the cultivation of cloves, and this obviously had a huge impact on the local population. By the 19th century, Dutch colonial power was at its height. The image could be read as a record of the natural resources and local inhabitants of the region. But the seemingly objective rendering also served the political interests of the colonial administration. To truly understand this drawing, one would need to look at archival materials such as colonial records and trade statistics to contextualize it more fully. Analyzing this artwork, then, allows us to consider the artist's role in shaping perceptions of the colonized world.
