Leo Rubinfien took this photograph, "Hebron, 2008, outside the Souk," sometime around then, using what looks like a film camera. I love the way he’s caught this man, almost like a sideways glance, right? The way his eyes dart to the side, like he’s got something to hide, or maybe he’s just curious. You can tell it’s outside—the light is so bright it almost hurts, and everything’s kind of bleached out. All the shades of gray and the sharp focus give it this immediate, documentary feel, but it is a very subjective point of view. I wonder what it was like for Rubinfien to be there, on that day, trying to capture a moment, a feeling. Do you think he developed the print himself in his dark room? Other photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson have captured similar decisive moments. It's a lineage, right? Anyway, it is as if the artist sees something more than just what's on the surface. You can feel his own thoughts and feelings about his subject. It's all about connection, and how artists continue this long conversation with each other.
