This is John William Casilear's pencil sketch of St. Andrews, Jamaica. The scene shows a dichotomy of civilization and nature: on one side, a cluster of buildings, and on the other, untamed vegetation. Note the palm tree, an ancient symbol of triumph and eternal life, which has been revered across cultures, from ancient Mesopotamia to the Roman Empire. In Christianity, the palm is associated with martyrdom, and the entry of Christ into Jerusalem. Think of how this symbol has traversed time. From ancient religious contexts to becoming a modern symbol of tropical paradises, the palm tree embodies a deep, collective yearning for serenity. Casilear's sketch captures this emotional undercurrent, placing us at a vantage point where human presence meets nature's enduring allure.
