This pear-shaped coffee pot features rocailles and C- and S-volutes, crafted in silver by A.D. Verschuur. Here, the volutes, particularly the S-shaped curves, speak to a deeper yearning for fluidity and transformation, echoing the Baroque’s fascination with dynamism and emotional intensity. Think of Bernini’s sculptures, where similar motifs convey a sense of movement, capturing figures in moments of ecstasy or dramatic tension. These swirling patterns, much like the waves they emulate, tap into the collective memory of water as both life-giving and chaotic. In the Rococo period, this motif appears in all forms of art. It is a visual language that conjures images of the sea, the constant flux of existence, and the subconscious desire to escape the constraints of the rational world. It is as though the artists and patrons, through these swirling forms, sought to navigate the turbulent waters of their own psyches.
