Editor: Here we have a watercolour from around the 19th century called 'Musician', author unknown. It depicts a person holding what looks like a small horn. The colors are so striking; particularly the bright blue of the central figure’s clothing. It's captivating! What’s your take on it? Curator: Ah, yes. This piece draws me in, makes me want to invent stories! Notice how the artist teases us with detail and flat planes. Look at the eyes – such character in them! But then the hands – almost like little paddles! And is that horn really a horn? Perhaps it’s a tiny, elegant perfume bottle she’s coyly offering, what do you think? Editor: A perfume bottle! That's a cool reading. I was thinking it looks a little bit like those hunting horns used for calling dogs. Curator: Maybe you're right; what a funny twist! The miniature style often carries that playful sense of irony. But notice, too, how her slight elevation suggests her elite place in society, how her stance appears timeless! Are we seeing reality or a theatrical stage? That’s what lingers for me. It’s as though I'm catching a glimpse into a rich fantasy. Editor: I like that. A rich fantasy - it definitely has a stage-like quality to it, everything seems carefully constructed. It’s made me appreciate miniatures a bit more too. Curator: Me too, this playful miniature really stirs my imagination every time.
