Lorenz Frølich made "Hagbard og Signe" with pencil and watercolor, and it's now at the SMK. Look how he’s built up the forms with these soft, feathery strokes, almost like he’s sketching with color. It's like watching a drawing slowly bloom into a painting. There’s this incredible lightness to the piece. It's got a very delicate surface, almost transparent in places, which gives the whole scene a dreamy, ethereal quality. The colors are muted, water-y, like he's capturing a half-remembered myth or a fading dream. Take the male figure, with that dark brow. See how the hatching follows the muscle forms? It is gestural and descriptive at once! Frølich reminds me a little of Puvis de Chavannes. Both artists seem to be reaching back to some kind of ideal, some pure vision of human form and emotion. Of course, we know there’s no such thing as purity – only endless layering and revision. Art is always a conversation, after all, and the best conversations are the ones that never quite settle on one single truth.
