This print by Joan Miró, called 'La Fronde' has this wonderful, playful quality. It's all about the freedom of the line, its ability to wander and create unexpected forms and feelings. Look at how Miró uses color – these transparent washes of blue, green, and the bold black lines that define the composition. The black feels almost like a child's drawing, so direct and unconcerned with perfection. Notice the way the black lines loop and twist, creating a sense of movement, as if the image is constantly in flux. There is a particular squiggly line that forms a sort of face – is it laughing? Crying? Who knows! And that’s the beauty of it, right? Miró reminds me a little of Paul Klee, with the way he embraces simplicity and lets his subconscious guide his hand. Ultimately, art is a conversation, a constant back-and-forth between artists across time.
