Dean Cornwell, back in the day, made this scene appear with oil paint, that looks like it had a mind of its own. It's like he splashed the canvas and then, with a bit of direction, transformed it into a landscape. I wonder if Cornwell felt like he was composing a scene from a play. Look at the mother, child and the man on the right: they are all actors on a stage, and they're caught in a moment of drama. The paint is applied so thinly in places that the figures seem to emerge from the white ground, becoming apparitions in the landscape. This painting reminds me that every stroke is a decision, every color a feeling made visible. I think Cornwell was trying to capture something fleeting here, a memory or a dream, and there’s an openness to it that I really appreciate. Like it’s less about the finished product and more about the journey, the exploration, and the conversation that painting sparks.
