This untitled print was made by EtchingRoom1 in 2016. It looks like a black and white dream, doesn't it? I can imagine the artist scratching away at the surface, building up these dense blacks bit by bit, like carving out a little world from the dark. There's something so old-fashioned and mysterious about it. Are these two characters lovers, or just passing acquaintances? And what's the story behind that strange window with the stars and the moon? You get the feeling that EtchingRoom1 was thinking about folk tales and dreams, and maybe even tapping into some really old stories that have been told for centuries. Looking at this image, I think about other artists who use printmaking to create their own unique visions – people like Paula Rego or even some of the German Expressionists. Each artist, across time, finds their own way to mark make with these tools. Ultimately, it reminds me that art is like a conversation between artists across time, and this print is just one little piece of that ongoing dialogue.
