This is a Westfriese duit, a coin made in 1658 by the province of West Friesland. Encircled by a laurel wreath, the inscription "West Frisia 1658" fills the duit. The laurel wreath, a classical symbol of victory and honor, finds its roots in ancient Greece, awarded to triumphant athletes and generals. We see it again and again across time, adorning Roman emperors and Renaissance heroes. Interestingly, its use on this coin broadcasts a symbolic association with these classical ideals, suggesting West Frisia's own aspirations of success. This symbol’s persistence reveals a deep psychological need to connect with past glories, invoking a sense of collective memory and a desire to link the present to a perceived golden age. It’s fascinating how such a small object can carry such weighty historical and cultural implications, continuously resurfacing across the ages, each time renewed with contemporary relevance.
