This coverlet was woven in 1853 by Arthur G. Merkley and it's something else! I love how the colors—a muted pink and an off-white—create a soothing, almost dreamlike quality, like a faded memory. Looking closely, you can see the incredible detail in the weaving. The floral motifs, the eagle, and even the text; they're all rendered with such precision. Imagine the skill and patience it took to create this! It's not just a blanket; it's a piece of history, a testament to craftsmanship. The way the patterns repeat and interlock reminds me a bit of the work of Anni Albers, who explored similar ideas in her textiles. But what really grabs me is the texture. I can almost feel the ridges and valleys of the woven threads, inviting you to reach out and touch it. Like looking at a Agnes Martin painting, you know? A real experience.
