Arie Willem Segboer created "Een jachtpartij," or "A Hunting Party" as a children's print in the Netherlands. These prints were often distributed as a way to educate children and instill social values through play. The image depicts a traditional hunting scene, complete with horses, dogs, and deer. The scene would have been very familiar to children of the time. Hunting was a recreational activity associated with wealth and status, reflecting the hierarchical structure of Dutch society. It’s important to recognize how gender is portrayed here, as hunting was exclusively a male activity and this is reflected in the absence of women in the scene. How do you feel about the depiction of animals as objects of pursuit? These prints not only entertained, but also subtly taught children about their place in the world, shaping their understanding of class, gender, and their relationship with nature.
