Douglas Volk painted this portrait of Abraham Lincoln with oil on canvas. The way Volk built up the image using small brushstrokes and subtle gradations of color is amazing, especially if you look closely at the face. You can really see the process, the way he’s thinking through the form. The texture is smooth, but there’s this incredible depth to the dark background, which makes Lincoln almost float forward. The color palette is restrained, mostly darks and browns, but the way the light catches the cheekbone, or the folds of his tie…that’s where the painting really sings. It’s like Volk is trying to catch the essence of Lincoln, not just a likeness, you know? That little highlight on the tip of his nose; it’s not just light, it’s like a spark of life. It reminds me a bit of Whistler, in how he used light and shadow to create mood and atmosphere. Art's an ongoing conversation, right? No fixed meanings, just possibilities.
