This photograph, "Bijeenkomst RAD," made by the NSB, captures a moment frozen in time. Look at the way the greyscale palette renders the crowd. It's almost like a study in textures. The uniforms, the hats, all compressed into a sea of similar tones. What really gets me is the way the crowd is both a mass and a collection of individuals. Each face, though small, tells a story, yet they all blend into a single, unified image of complicity. The light and shadow play across the surface, creating a sense of depth and unease. It’s like the photograph itself is holding its breath, knowing what we now know about the future these people were blindly marching towards. This image, with its chilling composition, reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter’s blurred photographs, capturing a similar sense of historical weight and ambiguity. Art, in the end, is about asking questions, not providing answers, and this photograph certainly leaves us with plenty to ponder.
