This is Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse's design for a covered vase and coupe in gilt bronze-mounted porcelain. Notice the eagle atop the lid of the vase on the left. For millennia, the eagle has been a symbol of power, victory, and divine authority, appearing in ancient Roman, Greek, and even Egyptian iconography. The eagle here is not merely decorative but laden with meaning, representing strength, courage, and foresight. On the right, a winged cupid holds up the coupe. This motif reminds us of the classical putti, symbols of love, desire and innocence, which recur throughout the Renaissance. The re-emergence of these symbols demonstrates our enduring human fascination with archetypes of power and love, reminding us that even in design, the past is always present, shaping our present and future expressions. These symbols connect with our collective memory and subconscious desires.
