Editor: So, this is Jacques Callot’s "Envy," a small etching, it seems. It's, well, rather disturbing! What leaps out at you when you look at this piece? Curator: Disturbing, yes, but also incredibly imaginative, don't you think? Look at the figure: snakes for hair, a grotesque little demon perched on her head. Callot wasn't just showing envy; he was embodying its ugliness. Editor: I suppose so. The dog looks pretty miserable too! Is that intentional? Curator: Absolutely! The mangy dog is another symbol of the debased state of envy. For me, it's a stark reminder of how corrosive this particular vice can be. Almost makes you want to be a better person, doesn't it? Editor: Definitely gives you something to think about. I'll never look at envy the same way again. Curator: Me neither. Callot had a way of getting under your skin, and staying there.
