Muirhead Bone made this pen and ink wash drawing of Rye from Camber. Bone has used the liquid properties of ink to great effect. Notice how the ink wash pools at the bottom of the page to give the impression of a dark, still body of water, contrasting with the fine pen lines used to capture the boats and buildings on the horizon. The way the ink bleeds into the paper gives a sense of atmosphere, as if the scene is shrouded in mist. This is a study in the use of simple materials, and the traditional skill of penmanship. As we consider this artwork, we must reflect on how Bone has approached the art of capturing a specific moment and place. This artwork blurs the boundary between craft and fine art.
