Aert Schouman made this watercolor titled, "Monument," sometime in the 18th century. Schouman lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a period marked by tremendous economic and social change; he was a glass painter, among other things, and his life was one of constant movement. The monument itself appears to be a tribute to classical antiquity, yet it’s filled with natural, earthly elements, such as wheat, fruit, and flora. Highlighting these elements, Schouman acknowledges the dependence of Dutch society on agriculture and trade. The mirror is also a key element, as it reflects a landscape with a bird perched in the center, almost urging the viewer to contemplate their own place in the world. The monument appears incomplete. In leaving the central plaque blank, Schouman encourages the viewer to consider what, or whom, they deem worthy of remembrance. What histories do we choose to honor, and how do these choices reflect our values and aspirations?
