Robert Frank made "Florida 1" without a date using photography, but that doesn't mean that time isn't of the essence here. The composition is split into different frames, it's like a roll of film, a recording of moments in sequence. It feels so jumpy, with all these points of view from different positions, some from inside a car, looking at a truck carrying workers. It must have been such a whirlwind for Frank to create this piece, thinking about the workers, the landscape, and the way it all fits together, even if it's fractured. We can see how Frank might have been experimenting with capturing different perspectives and different points in time. Maybe he was thinking about the relationship between seeing and being, moving through time. "Florida 1" reminds us how much artists are in conversation with one another, sharing ideas across time and inspiring one another's creativity. I think of painting, like photography, as a form of expression, which embraces uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
