Fernand Léger painted ‘Three Musicians’ at an unknown date using oil on canvas. Léger's marks are so clean and contained. Everything is in its place, a graphic sensibility is evident in the palette of greys, browns, and blacks that are so formally arranged on the canvas. The accordion in the center is a marvel, it is so contained and neatly placed that the design is almost like a badge or decorative motif. The trombone behind has such solidity and weight, yet the whole piece feels light. The whole composition feels like an open conversation. Léger is in dialogue with cubism, but also with something quite distinct, a celebration of modern life that is so unique to him. It reminds me of Stuart Davis who I also love, as they both manage to take normal life and elevate it to a different plane. Ultimately, it’s a testament to how artists can transform the mundane into something beautiful, complex, and utterly captivating.
