Here is an untitled artwork made by Daniel Dezeuze. It is an intricate grid of painted lattice that immediately draws your eye to its unique shape and colour. The artist has painted each part of the lattice a different colour using a simple colour palette of yellow, red, and blue that graduates up the structure. Deuzeze was part of the Supports/Surfaces group in France in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were interested in deconstructing painting to its basic elements. The group explored what happens when you isolate the canvas, stretcher, or paint. Deuzeze's interest in basic forms is evident, but he also challenges conventional notions of space and structure through his use of a simple grid system. The lattice structure is not merely a support for painting but becomes the painting itself. In his choice of an open lattice structure, Deuzeze invites us to consider how art can be both present and absent, solid and void, simultaneously.
