Here's an artwork by M.C. Escher, full of those delicious optical illusions he was so good at. Look at the dance between the black lines carving out negative space! You can almost feel the artist coaxing those dizzying curves into existence, one after the other. Maybe Escher started with the letter ‘D’ and watched as it began vibrating, emanating rays and drawing the viewer into a dizzying vortex of black and white. I can see the artist wrestling with the tension between order and chaos, challenging our perception of reality, a bit like my own struggles with finding order on the canvas, trying to make sense of the world. Escher's work makes me think of other artists like Bridget Riley, who also plays with perception and pattern, creating an exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity and endless possibilities.
