"Studies of Flying Putti" is a collection of sketches by the Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni. This work, completed between 1575 and 1642, exemplifies Reni's mastery of the human form. Reni's use of hatching, a technique of drawing lines to create shading, gives the putti, or chubby winged children, a sense of volume and movement. Reni’s sketches, like this one, were used as preparatory studies for larger paintings, demonstrating his careful attention to detail and artistic process. The study of the human figure, particularly in motion, was a hallmark of Renaissance art, and Reni’s work continues to inspire artists today.
