Duke of Wellington

Is it defiance against the tempest, or an acknowledgement of his own part in creating it? This use of light and darkness has echoes of Baroque drama and employs many symbols related to conquest and legacy. Are those brushstrokes meant to appear unsettling, perhaps? Editor: Yes, they absolutely are. Almost like chaos lurking at the edge of order. I hadn't thought about how calculated that must have been. Curator: Ask yourself: does this evoke similar feelings present in other portraits from the time? Or even now? How much are the impressions made by dress, setting, gesture... versus the deeper-rooted, innate cultural memories related to conflict? Editor: I suppose I focused so much on Wellington as an individual, I missed the deeper conversation the painting seems to be having about leadership itself. Thanks, that really broadened my view. Curator: It's a dialogue between the present and a culturally ingrained past; one symbol layered upon another, shaping not just the portrait, but its reception across generations. I find the way Lawrence achieves it so very telling.
