This etching, “Twee doedelzakspelers”, was created in 1642 by Hendrick Hondius I, a Dutch printmaker. The etching depicts two bagpipe players, each standing next to a wooden fence with their instrument held to their mouths. The figures are rendered in detail with a focus on their attire and the intricate folds of their clothing. Hondius I was a well-regarded printmaker who specialized in the reproduction of existing works, and in this case, he was referencing a drawing by Pieter Bruegel the Younger. The artwork provides a snapshot of Dutch life in the 17th century and captures the spirit of popular music and entertainment.
