This drawing of a brass candle holder was made by Gerald Bernhardt sometime during his long life. It’s such a clear and deliberate approach, and I love how Bernhardt’s process feels so present. The drawing has a real tactile quality, you can almost feel the cool smoothness of the brass. The color is muted, and warm, like the metal, and the lines are soft and precise, not trying to be flashy or showy. Check out the lines around the candle holder. The artist uses these to show light playing on the metal and create an almost luminous effect. You can imagine Bernhardt carefully making each mark, building up the form bit by bit. I’m reminded a little of the technical drawings of Duchamp, and wonder if he might have seen those. Though with Bernhardt there is more of an interest in the play of light and tone. Overall, this drawing is a reminder that even the simplest objects can be a source of beauty and inspiration.
