This ornate Rococo-style "Wall-Light (bras de lumière)" from c. 1740 - 1745 is an excellent example of the decorative arts of the 18th century. The gilded bronze piece features an elaborate design of intertwined scrolls and leaves, culminating in two candle holders. The asymmetrical composition and dynamic curves of the wall sconce were popular in the Rococo period and created a sense of movement and lightness. The Rococo style, which emphasized elegance and grace, was a reaction against the formality of the Baroque era, and it was favored by French aristocracy.
